Thing #24

Whew! I've finally completed all 23 things! It's taken me a really long time as I am really quite a dunce as far as being computer literate. Paul has been a great help at the library. I've also called on my son and daughter to help me at home where I could spend more time making mistakes (they are computer experts, being teenagers) and my husband (who was at SFU working towards a degree in computer science when he became a firefighter). I also found it hard to make the time to do the research, but when I did, before I knew it I'd been at the computer for a couple of hours. Anyhow, some of the programs I found really interesting and others not so much. But, I feel I have learned enough to follow up using many of the programs offered. I really like what audiobooks and podcasts have to offer and the subscription service is interesting. I'll be researching some of the sites at home when I can put a lot more time into it. Thanks for the opportunity.

Thing #15

I have successfully added my entry to the NVDPL Sandbox wiki.

Thing #10

I thing the 'delicious' bookmarking tool is quite handy. It certainly is useful for finding related articles. I could spend quite a lot of time researching one item and moving on to other related information.

Thing #22

I tried to add the RSS feeds of both Podcastalley.com and Podcastpickle.com to my Google Reader account but was unable to do so. I searched Podcastalley.com and found it somewhat interesting. However, I'm really interested in downloading some of the CBC podcasts and will most certainly attempt to do so from home.

Thing #19

I've checked out a few of the libraries subscription sites and found Canadian Newstand, Oxford Reference Online and Novelist Plus interesting. I think all three will be useful sites for us at the library. I plan to check out more when I have more time to browse.

Thing #17

I probably will not use the shared calendar in Microsoft Outlook but now I know how to access it if I need to set up a meeting.

Thing #11

Have explored 'technorati' and found some relevance to library applications but not much.

Thing #3

Exercise completed.

Thing #23

I enjoyed browsing the selections for audiobooks. I have chosen two and hope to use them soon. Unfortunately my selections can only be used on my PC and I like to listen to books on my ipod so I'll have to try one of the other titles to do this.

Thing #20

I tried to go online with Askaway with the NVDPL but the page could not be displayed. Then I tried WVML and VPL with the same results. I will try again.

Thing #18

After reviewing the tutorial on 'search folders' in Outlook 2003 I realize how disorganized my email is. I can see how this organizational tool would help me a lot.

Thing #14

I liked the Booklovers Wiki and tried the SJCPL site as it piqued my interest in genealogy but found it limited to the the US. I will look up others as I want to search my family history in Ireland.

Thing #12

I've just signed myself up on Facebook. Wow, most of my high school classmates are already on there. I never thought I'd be interested in a social networking site but I can see the benefits of reconnecting with old friends whose names may have changed in the last 30 years and would be difficult to find otherwise. Just adding a note in May that since I've signed up on Facebook, I've had many highschool friends add me to their account. I think that's great!

Thing #9

I've signed on to LibraryThing and added some of my favourite books.

Thing #8

I have downloaded the online image generator "cooltext" and I made this...

Things #6 &7

I have finished both #6 and #7. I set up both Google Reader and Blogline accounts and have found the international news and sports blogs interesting.

Thing #21

I really enjoyed the music video on Youtube of the treadmill dancers. It's by a band called 'OK Go'. They are the most unlikely looking dancers but they do this amazing video on four treadmills. They must have practiced for ages to coordinate their moves. Don't see it being that useful for the library website but I loved it. I looked up 'treadmill dance' on YouTube and clicked on the first video. Another way I found it was to call up 'OK Go-Here It Goes Again'. But all you have to do is click...

The information regarding proper email techniques was very helpful. Personally, I can't stand reading long emails so tend not to send them to my friends. The email 'netiquette' was pretty much common sense. I have software that includes protection from 'phishing' but never really knew what it was for. Thank goodness I have it installed. I already knew not to open email from unknown sources but the tips for avoiding viruses were certainly helpful.
